FIP

Feline Infectious Peritonitis, also know as  FIP, is caused by a mutation of the Feline Coronavirus (FCoV). No one knows what causes the mutation but it is believed to be stress related. It is believed that 90 percent of cats have been exposed to the virus at some point but just because your cat has the virus doesn’t mean it will mutate. There is wet FIP, dry and ocular/neuro. Different types is just how the symptoms are showing in your cat. The treatment is 84 days long and 84 days of observation. FIP use to be a death sentence but due to research from UC Davis, there is a cure! It is important to know what signs and symptoms to look out for and get treatment as soon as possible.

Symptoms include:

  • Lethargic
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Hiding/sleeping a lot
  • Weight loss
  • Huge fluid like belly (almost looks pregnant but skinny)
  • Change in eye color/randomly cloudiness in one or both eyes
  • Unable to suddenly walk/struggling to walk

The best way to diagnose FIP is to get a blood test and to send the results to FIP warriors.

A lot of vets still don’t know about FIP and what to look for so it is best to reach out to them.
